Methods of detecting newborn’s vision

In addition to obvious deformities, visual abnormalities in newborns or small babies are generally difficult to detect. It has to wait until half a year later, as the symptoms become obvious, the parents will notice; at this time, the treatment of certain congenital eye diseases is too late. So how to detect abnormal visual development of newborn babies as early as possible?
1. Illuminate your eyes with a flashlight. At this time the newborn close his eyes immediately. Lightly open the eyelids to illuminate the pupils, and the pupils will shrink. This means that the pupils reflect light.
2. Coordinate movements of head and eyes. Newborns bow their heads forward and turn their eyeballs upward; tilt their heads back and look downwards. This is called a doll eye.
3. Brief original gaze. Using a big red pompom to move a 60-degree angle at a distance of 20 cm from the eye can cause the newborn to look at the red ball. The head and eyes will follow the red ball and move slowly. This is called head-eye coordination.
4. Sports nystagmus. Place a paper cylinder or drum (about 10 cm long and 5-6 cm in diameter) painted with black vertical stripes at a distance of 20 cm from the front of the newborn’s eyes. Rotate it from side to side, and the newborn will watch Sometimes nystagmus occurs, that is, the eyeballs follow the rotation of the cylinder or drum to make horizontal movements. This is called visual motor nystagmus.
If the above four inspections are all up to the standard, it means that the newborn’s visual development is good.
